Spring Term 2023
As part of our Topic learning, we have been studying the Native Americans. We designed and made a ‘talking stick’ using a range of different materials, including: sticks, wool, sequins, beads and feathers. Everyone was very proud of their final products!

In PE this term, our focus is Gymnastics and Dance. During our PE sessions with Mrs Lane, we have been using the gym apparatus to improve our balance and strength. We have some very brave Butterflies!

To support wellbeing and healthy bodies, we have been enjoying some yoga. We love learning the different yoga poses! Here are some of our favourites from this week’s session.

Antarctica Day!
Butterfly Class had a fantastic time for our Antarctica day. They took part in a variety of themed activities over the day, including: cold places reading comprehension, ice play and designing an Antarctic flag. The highlight of the day was enjoying some special snow on the school field!

Today in English, we took a trip to our beautiful Learning Garden to spot the signs of Autumn, in preparation for our poetry writing. We used our senses to discover what we could see, hear, feel and smell. The children described the crunchy leaves under their feet, the red apples hanging on the trees and the birds chirping.

Nov’22
Happy 150 years! We had an exciting day celebrating our wonderful school being open for 150 years. To mark this special occasion, we all dressed up and enjoyed a day full of table top games, a special collective worship, school quiz and a delicious cake!

Oct’22
In Maths, we have been exploring different coins and notes. Year 1 worked together in small groups to sort the coins based on shape and colour.

In English this week, Butterfly Class created a new character for their version of the story, ‘Biscuit Bear’. We read through the instructions and identified the verbs. We then followed the recipe to make a delicious shortbread animal.

Oct’22
To celebrate ‘World Mental Health Day’ we did some mindful colouring and enjoyed some mindfulness breathing. Our favourites were the ‘Bubble Bounce’ and ‘Rainbow Relaxation’.

Oct’22
In English this week, the children became investigators to predict and make inferences based on the evidence left in the classroom. After much deliberation, we came to the conclusion it was ‘Biscuit Bear’ from our new class story.

The children have enjoyed using their senses to write super adjectives to describe the pastry and practised role playing the story to their peers. Butterfly have some amazing actors/actresses!

Autumn Term
Sept’22
The children of Butterfly Class have enjoyed exploring their new decking area. It is so wonderful to have this space as an extension of our classroom. The children love to spend their free time working and playing together here, using the brilliant resources. The class castle has been the favourite so far!

Summer Term 2022
????????! 07-07-22
We went on a trip to Longleat to support our work on koalas! We thought they were much bigger in real life, very lazy and a bit smelly!

And of course, we enjoyed looking at some other animals while we were there and we went through the drive through to see the lions and tigers!

On Monday 27th June, our Year 2 Football Team headed over to Templecombe on tenterhooks! We’d had our fingers crossed all day for dry weather and it had seemed to work!
Within the 1st 5 minutes, Templecombe had managed to skillfully slip the ball past our Captain and Goalie, Lucas. But once Toby had entered the pitch we knew we’d be fine – he managed to score us 4 goals! Templecombe managed another great goal, but St Nicholas just weren’t giving up and thanks to Samuel and Lucas, we scored another 2 goals. 6-2 to St Nicholas! Hurrah!
It goes without saying that we are incredibly proud of the team for winning, but what we are most proud of is the way they worked as a team, they kept each other’s spirits up, they supported each other (lots of dancing and celebrating after goals!!) and they had impeccable manners. Well done Year 2 🙂

??/?/??
This morning in Collective Worship, Reverend Kevin taught us how to say ‘thank you’ in different languages! Can you spot the one he popped in to make us laugh?!

Our Year 2 Football Team are ready for our match against Templecombe on Monday!

June 2022
Here are some examples of the FABULOUS projects Butterfly Children worked on over the half term holiday!
The brief: Find out as much information as possible about Captain James Cook. You are allowed to present your work in any form you’d like (the more creative, the better!!).

We presented our work to Ladybird and Hedgehog Class! They were so impressed!

‘Jubilee, Jeanes and Jolly Well Done!’
We celebrated The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style with an extra celebration too – Mrs Jeanes has been a Governor at our school for 36 years and we wanted to make it special for her.

Year 2 Football Team!
Lots of our Year 2 children have shown a huge interest in football, so we have decided to start up our own team! Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome in Jacob Crabb (an ex pupil) who plays in the Junior Premier League. Jacob will be coaching us for our first match against Templecombe in June.

Thursday 12th May
This afternoon, we made Australian hats using marshmallows! Miss Hall said we could eat the marshmallows BUT we weren’t allowed to use our hands!!

Monday 9th May

We are learning the Queen’s Jubilee Song – to practise this song at home use this link 🙂
RE
We have learnt some new vocabulary including mezuzah, Torah and kippah. A kippah is a cap worn by Jewish men. We tried some on!

In art, we are learning about Aboriginal Art. Today, we used templates to have a go. It was very tricky and took us a long time, but we were very patient and they looked great!
In maths, we are learning to tell the time to the hour, half hour, quarter to and past. We went out onto the playground to show times using sticks as the minute hand and hour hand!

Congratulations to Ronny, who passed his Level 4 Swimming – thank you for bringing in your certificate to share the good news! 🙂

Monday 25th April
We started the summer term with a great afternoon!! We had a visit from professional high jumper, Robert Mitchell. He told us great stories about his childhood and how his teachers challenged him to jump higher and higher! Robert also set up a big fitness challenge for us, we had so much fun and learnt some new exercise including Spotty Dogs and Mountain Climbers.

Welcome to the Spring Term!

We have been learning about how seeds grow in Science. We planted some beans! We can’t wait to see them grow!

Thursday 7th April
Today, the Easter Bunny hid some eggs for us in the Learning Garden! We had great fun trying to find them before spending the afternoon at the church for a lovely Easter service.

Wednesday 23rd March
We had such a great afternoon listening to visiting author, Claire Barker talk about how she became a writer, and things that inspired her to write stories. Children in Butterfly Class asked some really sensible questions such as ‘Who is your favourite character?’, ‘How long does it take you to write a book?’ and ‘How many books have you written?’.

Monday 7th March 2022
Today, we started a new text called ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ in English. We found some magic paintbrushes when we arrived in the morning, so we went outside to paint with them! Some of the children are SURE their pictures came to life!!

Tuesday 1st March 2022
St. David’s Day!
We learnt that the daffodil is the national flower of Wales. We made a card for our loved ones using daffodils as a focus!
WB 31st Jan 2022
Creative Writing Week
We had a visit from the lovely Millie (Mrs Crabb’s Cocker Spaniel). We had such a lovely morning learning all about Millie, some of us were even able to throw her ball, or race her! She was SO fast!

We later discovered that after she’d left Butterfly Class, she had gone on an adventure! Have a look below to see where she went!

RE
This term in RE, we have learnt that Christians believe God created the world. We re-enacted the 6 days where God created the world, and everything in it.

We also know that Christians believe God created humans to look after our animals and planet! We made our own little Garden’s of Eden on the school field 🙂

Friday 28th January
Today, we learnt all about the food people eat in Asia! They eat some really strange (gross!!) stuff including fermented eggs, fish eyes, wasp cookies and worms. Miss Hall couldn’t find any of the above in Morrisons, so the children had to pretend!!
Friday 21st January
For our Golden Time this week, we joined Dragonfly Class for a play in the new park in Henstridge!

Then we came back and did gymnastics for PE, using the equipment in the hall.

Thursday 20th January

19.1.22
PC William Mortimer came into our class today to tell us a little bit about how he keeps the people of Henstridge safe. Next time you see him, be sure to say hello!
Friday 14th January
Well done to George, Amy and Lucas who were awarded a certificate from Mrs Shearer for improved writing!

Thursday 13th January
One frosty morning… Butterfly Class had lots of chilly, icy fun!

Tuesday 11th January
We thought that a section of ‘The Visible Sounds’ sounded like a poem, so we made our own poem about a different sense!
Mrs Payne’s group poem

Miss Hall’s group poem

Thursday 6th January
We started a new text called ‘The Visible Sounds’ by Yin Jianling and Yu Rong. So far we have discovered that it is about a little girl called Mili and she has lost her sounds. We made some giant listening ears and went on a sound walk! These are some of the things we heard:
- Cars
- Lorries
- Children shouting
- Birds tweeting
- Footsteps on the gravel and decking
- Laughing

Autumn Term

Friday 12th November
STEM Challenge!!
To end our ‘Maths Week’ we were given a challenge. The rules were: Using 5 sheets of newspaper and some tape, make a free-standing tower strong enough to hold a pear 6 inches off the table.
We worked very hard in our groups to make our towers, then test them!!

Wednesday 10th November
We have been learning about Remembrance Day and why it is important to us. Here in Henstridge, we have some local heroes, so we went to see the War Memorial, and some of the grave stones of men who fought in the war. We learnt so much from Mrs Jeanes, who was kind enough to come along for the walk with us.

Tuesday 2nd November
In English, we looked at some sparklers and created a word bank full of fantastic adjectives to describe them, including sparkly, crackling and scorching!
We also used this opportunity to talk about fire safety and how we need to keep ourselves safe on Bonfire Night.

Monday 1st November
Our first day back after half term and Miss Hall had us working hard – we learnt all about the value of different coins!

To get into the Autumn vibe, we created some fantastic observational drawings of pumpkins! We had to follow some really tricky step-by-step instructions, but we were so great at listening and we were so proud of ourselves at the end.

Thursday 21st October
We spent some time in the garden this afternoon, and found the BIGGEST apples ever!!! We had a little taste, and they were so juicy!

Smartie Maths!

Monday 18th October
Today in art, we lit some candles and looked at the way fire moves. Then we did some observational drawings. Using sketching pencils, we experimented with the pressure so that we could shade our drawings. We know exactly how dangerous fire can be, as we’ve learnt so much about the Great Fire of London, so we were very careful to stay away from the candles.

Monday 11th October
In PSHE we have been learning how to listen to our bodies and notice the feelings we have when we exercise. Today, we explored some yoga positions. It was so lovely and relaxing outside in the sunshine!

Monday 4th October
Today, we discussed how Tudor houses were different to the houses we live in now. The main differences we suggested were:
- Made of wood
- Straw roof
- Wooden doors
- All joined together with no gaps
- Painted black and white
Then we found out that they used a method called ‘wattle and daub’ to make the walls. We decided to give it a go ourselves! It’s much harder than it looks!

Tuesday 28th September
We are learning about the Great Fire of London. We wanted to see how Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary so we had a go at quill writing! It was so much fun, but we think it must have taken him ages as it’s quite tricky!
