Dragonfly Class, 27th September

The weather was dry this afternoon for dragonfly class, this was to be the first time this term that the children had come out to do” Green Fingers garden club”, the children were very excited.

Marley, Jack, Fi and Myleigh put on their wellie boots and we then went into the learning garden to find the box of gloves, the children had fun putting these on, and managed it well.

I talked to this group about how to hold and use the gardening tools safely, this afternoon we were going to be using trowels. I had made some holes in the old water trough from their decking, (we like to re-cycle items), and so this was going to make a super planter, which was at the correct height for the dragonfly children to use.

They had to mix garden soil, compost and sand in the wheel barrow, then the trough was half filled with the mixture, now for the planting firstly the group planted mixed daffodil bulbs, making a deep hole to pop these in the right way up, then some orange tulip bulbs went in not quite so deep and the children covered these over.

Finally the children planted out some beautiful frilled snap dragons to give some autumn colour, the group had time to explore the learning garden before joining P.E, this group all received a dojo point as for first time gardeners they did very well!

Oli, Amelia and a few more of their friends, put on their wellies and came to join me out in the learning garden, they too, had a safety talk about using different tools out in the garden. Very quickly these children put on gloves and helped me carry some trays of plants over to their planting trough, we just had to add a few more bulbs and some more colour.

Amelia and Oli and Dominic planted purple crocus called “firefly”, whilst the other children planted up violas called” magic”, these little pansy flowers were bright and cheerful, then the large trough was filled with the rest of the compost mixture and the plants were watered, Amelia was in charge of this!

Moving onto perennial plants which are good for bees and hoverflies, the children planted some new flowering plants into two of the raised wooden beds, .one of the plants being a large yellow daisy type flower then a yellow potentilla, a blue campanula and a pink hardy geranium, all of these will be filled with pollen in the spring to attract the bees, the group watered these well. I showed this group how to clean of and put away the trowels and their gloves, we had a lovely time out in the learning garden, and there are certainly a few green fingered gardeners in the making.

Butterfly Class, 20th September

Today a group of mainly butterfly class children came out onto the playing field to plant a special grape vine (Mrs Woods are new class teacher had made this suggestion). The vine ties in with the beautiful vine we have on our R.E display in the hall.

The children dug a large hole added compost and lifted the vine plant from its pot, it was carefully put in the hole, then a wooden sectioned box was placed around it to protect the roots and stem from the weather. Children filled the box with more compost and feed, then we carefully tied in its grape laden branches with twine, we hope that it will wind its self along the fence in front of explorers, and give us lots of grapes in the future. The grape variety is Muscat with black glossy grapes.

The children later in the week added some daffodil bulbs to the wooden box to give some spring colour when the grape vine had no foliage on its branches.

Ladybird Class, 13th September

I would like to say that it has been another dry afternoon for gardening club but, we all found ourselves working in drizzle, although it didn’t stop the first team of gardeners wanting to do some digging.

Once we had found all the wellies, gloves and forks, Archie, Amy, Ronny, Freddie, Demmi and Logan each chose a position in which to dig for potatoes, this was so exciting.

Archie was amazing at this job finding more and more potatoes, then Demmi and Logan joined in it became a bit of a competition.

With all the potatoes now harvested, we looked at the varieties and colours, there were pink, purple and white in various sizes.

This group had some time to now go pond dipping, we talked about the pond plants and how they needed to be cut back, a job for another day.

Kieron, Maddie, Isaac, Grace and Jake waded through another mountain of wellington boots and all came out with a pair each.

Most years the children get to harvest our lavender bushes, we still have quite a few, they were planted around ten years ago so they are doing well.

Using scissors the group worked in pairs cutting long stems of lavender flowers which had now formed seed (this is what will be harvested to make new plants, essential oil and medical use). The children made all of the cut lavender into bundles and we put these in a dry place, until I am able to take this to” Fiddleford lavender farm” where it’s get put to good use.

All of the group had fun doing this, they also loved the relaxing aroma which came from the lavender, Isaac and Maddie just kept smelling it, Grace loved the purple flowers.

Time to pack away, explore the garden and hang the wellies back up on the racks,

Lots of dojos today for great care being taken when using sharp tools, going the extra mile when things needed doing. And amazingly we did see the sun shine! Another few jobs ticked off of our autumn schedule.
