Welcome to Dragonfly Class.
Some of the things we have been up to recently:
Spring 2:
Week 4:
What a busy week we have had!
Reception did some incredible independent writing.
When exploring the differences between old and new toys and what they’re made from, we had a ride on our school rocking horse.
Week 3:
Happy World Book Day!
Week 2:
Year One really enjoyed partitioning 2 and 3 digit numbers this week. I am really proud of their efforts!
What a creative way of learning this week’s tricky word. Well done Charlie!
Building on last week’s Topic learning about castles, Reception created some amazing castles, complete with defence mechanisms we have learnt whilst studying some sieges from history.
In Year One, we have also been practising sequencing the features of date writing. We have been trying to make sure we put the day first, followed by the date and ending in the month.
Week 1:
In Topic this week, we have been studying history; specifically, the features of effective castles. The children built some awesome castles and explained their functions, including drawbridges, a portcullis, battlements, food stores, a moat, their position on a hill, high thick walls and even a trampoline to get to the battlements!
Meanwhile, in Maths we have been consolidating last term’s learning about measuring height.
The children have been measuring animals with cubes and beginning to use rulers to measure them in cm too!
RE has seen us learning about Jewish and Christian beliefs about the natural world. This week, we also learnt about how Humanists believe the world was created (the Big Bang) and comparing it with the Christian creation story. We then made a tableau of the creation story.
Spring 1:
We are racing through the year!
Week 6:
Another half term done, and another week with lots of new experiences and learning.
A definite highlight for us has been pet day – what a lot of cute dogs we’ve seen.
Thank you for meeting us, Nala, Yoda and Joy!
Week 5:
We have been exploring recycling this week, why we recycle and what can be recycled. Then, we made some creations with recyclable materials.
We had some great fun celebrating Number Day – Reception have been introduced to odd and even numbers and doubles!
Look at them sorting dominoes into ‘doubles’ and ‘not doubles’!
Week 3:
In our Art lesson this week, we learnt about Yayoi Kusama and her dotty paintings. Here are some of the children’s awesome creations!
In other news, some of our Year 1 children made a stick of cubes which was 109 cubes long! Longer than Miss Stokes!
Week 2:
We have begun exploring Asia this term, and this week we looked at some different foods from China, Japan and India. We described the flavours and then had fun playing with them – especially the noodles!
Week 1:
Reception have been learning the first tricky words in recent weeks. This week is ‘he’.
We have witnessed more amazing building this week – Including a huge city which reminds us of London and Tokyo!
Autumn 2:
Week 7:
Father Christmas visited us by helicopter!
Thank you to all who joined us for our Nativity – our children did brilliantly.
Our Year 1 children have developed their writing skills immensely. I am so proud!
Week 6:
Thank you so much, Wilf, for reading us a story. Your storytelling is beautiful!
Week 5:
We are working our way towards Christmas and the children are getting incredibly excited.
A huge well done to my amazing Year 1 writers – those who have been avidly reading at home, it really shows in your writing!
A definite highlight of our week has been learning about Michaelangelo in Topic. The children were astounded by how long ago he lived, and they were perplexed by the fact that he painted lying down. We had a go – some paint dropped on our faces, which taught us to use less paint on our brushes… and I apologise for the amount of paint which got in the children’s hair!
Week 4:
Look at our Reception children’s awesome design! They created a ‘maze’ walkway and then wanted to raise it above ground level, so they sought out other objects and placed them underneath. The children had to work out where to put each stilt, so that the maze wouldn’t fall or break.
We have enjoyed learning about the human body and labelling various parts on one.
Aren’t our volcanoes beautiful! Inspired by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius and our learning about Pompeii.
Week 3:
We had the best day at Longleat. The children did brilliantly; they were considerate and excited, and they managed to stay awake!
Week 2:
Our Year 1 children are becoming very studious nowadays.
Huge thanks to our friends who brought in some beautiful, incredibly tame cats for us to learn about and meet.
They were so gorgeous and I am proud of how mature our Dragonfly children were.
In PSHE we discovered how to eat like a baby! It was hilarious smashing up the fruit and rubbing it on the tables! We did notice that the fruit didn’t taste very fruity afterwards, though, and it was very hard to eat without using our teeth!
Week 1:
We have had a fun week with Mrs Lickiss joining our class for a little while!
Some of our children have demonstrated fantastic engineering skills.
We also had a lovely afternoon with Hedgehog Class, making our poppies for a Remembrance display.
Others have enjoyed developing their fine motor skills, hitting golf tees into pumpkins.
A very important message was communicated this week: ALL food is healthy in moderation. We discussed the benefits which come from all foods, on our bodies, minds and hearts/feelings. Please reiterate this to your child! Everything is healthy in moderation, nothing in excess. We want to support our children to understand food nutrition and grow up caring for themselves.
Here are some photos of them building healthy, balanced meals.
Finally, a highlight from our week is this beautiful church and graveyard. No provocation whatsoever, this came from a child’s imagination. How moving and special!
Autumn 1:
Week 6:
It’s hard to believe we are almost at the end of our first half term of the year. Here are some things the children have enjoyed in Week 6.
Creating our own workouts in PSHE.
Learning all about the Great Fire of London and watching Butterfly Class set their model of 1600s London houses alight!
Week 5:
What a fantastic week of working, playing, exploring we have had!
We went on a scavenger hunt around the garden and collected bits and pieces to create birds’ nests!
The children built models of Tower Bridge in London.
Reception have been learning about repeating patterns.
Here are a few pictures of the children pretending to be their favourite characters:
Week 4:
I just have to share these gems… Through our Computing learning, I taught the Year 1 children how to use our class tablet, how to unlock it and use the camera, which I hope will help with their learning through the year. These are the initial photographs they took and they are just so joyous!
We have been exploring animal classifications as part of our Science topic. This week, we looked at amphibians. As the garden has recently been cleared, the children got to have a look at the pond. We discussed how some amphibians (like frogs) might love it there; we also briefly discussed how frogs were unlikely to be there in the winter, because amphibians hibernate, due to being cold-blooded.
This term, we have been reading Paddington, re-writing it and retelling it. These are some photos of our re-enactments. They were fantastic!
Week 3:
Having witnessed our Year 1 children throughout Reception, it is amazing watching them use their skills and explore the resources in new ways, as they grow. I can’t believe we have some 6 year olds in our class already!
Meanwhile, our lovely Reception children have been beginning their Phonics journey, through a range of tactile means. These include play dough, sandpaper letters, magnetic foam letters, and rainbow writing boards.
Week 2:
The children enjoyed learning about Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III. Look at this queen!
Well done Dragonflies, for explaining why it is important to keep our passwords private.
We have loved learning about the UK and its countries. I have been really impressed with the children for their identification of different UK countries, and for some of them identifying the capital cities! How fantastic!
New and existing Dragonfly children enjoying the trim trail!
Week 1:
It has been wonderful watching our Year 1 cohort taking care of our new Reception children. I am, as ever, incredibly proud of them for being kind and compassionate children.
Meanwhile, welcome to our new Reception children! They have made themselves at home already!
