Autumn Term A

Week 1:

What a start to the year! Our children have had a fabulous time exploring their new classroom and are learning loads already.

Another awesome week! Super work from all Dragonfly children, especially with listening, teamwork, Maths and rhyming.

We spent some time discussing our emotions this week, and how we might look when we feel a certain emotions.

The children have been exploring matching objects, and looking at abstract and concrete matching objects. They did a fantastic scavenger hunt!

Week 3:

This week has been such a lot of fun… we have got up to…

We started learning our GPCs in Phonics. The children loved writing in sand.

We are very proud of James for trying a new food this week!

In Maths, we have been comparing quantities, size, and mass. We had a great time using the mass scales and discussing ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’.

Week 4:

Another incredible week, well done Dragonflies!

This week, we started looking at our topic – Antarctica. The children were mesmerised by the colours, textures, and animals we met in our sensory tuff tray.

In Maths, we have learnt about capacity, comparing capacities, and we have started looking at repeating patterns. These children never fail to amaze me!

Dragonfly class have been trying really hard with their Phonics learning, since having started learning our GPCs. This week, we formally introduced ‘red words’ (otherwise known as ‘tricky words’) and once again, the children have been utterly incredible. We learnt the word ‘I’ and enjoyed a multi-sensory exploration of how it is built.

Finally, we have had such a lot of fun with the puppet theatre. The children have performed shows, hosted, served drinks and snacks, and just generally been wonderful.

Due to such enthusiasm, I will be making more puppet wooden spoons for other performances!

Week 5:

I have loved seeing our children draw and create their interpretations of Antarctica, based on our learning. Here is a picture of ‘icebergs’, just like I drew in Drawing Club for the children!

I was given a birds’ nest which had fallen out of a tree – the children loved discussing where it had come from, what it was, and what had lived in there.

Our lovely children have been practising their number formation and composition this week – they really impressed us with their work.

This week, we learnt tricky (or ‘red’) word ‘the’. Our children were fantastic, as always!

Week 6:

Dragonfly children have started Week 6 with a bang – well done to everyone who worked really hard to use apple halves and paint to create ‘pumpkin’ prints!

I love watching the children play ‘teachers’. Lots of them pretend to be me, Mr Pavey, and Mr Webb! It’s great to see such ambition! And just look at how much fun they have singing ‘5 Currant Buns’.

Our lovely children have loved using the sand this week, engaging their gross motor skills, fine motor skills, proprioception, and emotional regulation. I am also proud that they have been sharing the space and resources very responsibly.

We have been learning 2D shapes in Maths this week, and the children really impressed us with their knowledge.

Week 7:

Huge thank you to Stalbridge Dentists for coming to visit us today. We really appreciated them taking time out to visit us and tell us about how to care for our teeth.

Well done to Dragonflies for grasping the concept of directional/spatial vocabulary.

We have learnt a new ‘red word’ – no! We use the rhyme ‘n – o – spells -no’

It is really lovely to see our children playing our tricky word ‘ghost’ game!

This week, we have been focusing on number 4 and 5, and how we compose and form them.

Week 8:

In Maths this week, we looked at our numbers 0-5 and then 2D shapes.

We have had a wonderful time this week, dressing up for Halloween and enjoying Halloween activities.

Our children have loved finding our red words wherever I have hidden them.

Autumn Term B

Week 1:

We learnt about Diwali in Dragonfly Class this week. The children loved making Diwali lanterns!

Firework Night

The children learnt all about Bonfire Night this week, they learnt about the story of Guy Fawkes and how he tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Later, in Art, they created some beautiful firework pictures, using chalk on black paper, and paint and glitter on black paper.

Week 2:

We have had so much fun this week! Just look at the awesome house the children built with Mrs Johnson!

Some children have noticed our new big whiteboard and are practising their learning…

A huge well done to the children who have started trying to write equations/number sentences. Gorgeous!

It was a privilege for us to learn about Remembrance Day and give thanks to those who served our country in both world wars. Here are our beautiful loose part poppies.

We have loved dressing up – Miss Stokes dresses up in the costumes too! Some children dressed up like their parents have to for work.

More multi-sensory tricky word practise!

Week 3:

Another incredible week with our brilliant Dragonfly children.

This week, we visited our local church to explore Christianity and the importance of burying and remembering people who have passed.

In PSHE, we discussed the importance of washing our hands with hot soapy water, using a science experiment to confirm our hypothesis.

It snowed this week and Miss Stokes took us outside to play in the snow! It was so much fun, but we had to remember that it was not Christmas Eve!

It was really fun playing opticians during Continuous Provision this week.

Week 4:

As we draw closer to Christmas, and enter fully into winter, we are practising keeping ourselves safe and warm, and creating wintry pictures.

Look at our wonderful children choosing to practise their number bonds to 10!

We have loved listening to our focus children reading stories!

Week 5:

A great start to the week, we have been writing our equations to 10 – and beyond!

Christmas!

The children have enjoyed decorating our tree.

Week 6:

We have really enjoyed making and playing with ice this week!

The pantomime was quite the experience!

Spring Term A

How are we in Spring term already?

This week, we have explored capacity and mass:

The children in Dragonfly class have looked closely at the planets in the solar system:

We have some exceptional engineers in our class! Here is a viaduct and a train on top!

Another brilliant week of

Learning about recycling.

Building using recyclable materials!

Week 6:

This week has started off brilliantly, with the children choosing to revisit our previous STEM learning and build with spaghetti and blu tac.

We discussed how different age groups require different provision.

We have been loving learning about Ramadan this week – making Ramadan lanterns and discussing why moons and stars are a symbol. We wondered if it was because during Ramadan, Muslims eat when the sun has gone down, and at that point give thanks to their god for all they have.

During some lessons, we have practised writing the date!

We have also been enjoying chilling out.

Spring Term A

Week 1:

The new alphabet puzzle has been very popular!

Our children have been busy making their own creations…

And exploring what Earth looks like from space, and what kinds of features and environments we can find on Earth.

Week 2:

Our week started absolutely beautifully, with a Monday afternoon of litter picking in the playground to care for our planet, playing on the trim trail, and exploring our learning garden.

In the learning garden, we fed the fish (they were very sleepy) and we searched for sticks and leaves to make loose part art – how fantastic are the creations!

Week 6

It has been a really fun week, we have…

planted sunflower seeds!

And learnt about 3D shapes – including spheres, cylinders, cubes and cuboids! The wonderful children even told me what a cone and pyramid were!

We explored building with 3D shapes, seeing which might balance and which might not, the impact of their flat faces and curved faces. We also discovered that the circular face of our cylinder has a camber, so the sphere stayed balanced on top!

The children loved reading their high frequency words during snack time today. They were word perfect, they practise them so much!

Our story – ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, of which we are so very proud.
