PE & Sports

Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity – John F. Kennedy

PE Intent

At St Nicholas C of E Primary School we offer a dynamic, varied and stimulating program of activity to ensure that all children progress physically through an inspirational, unique and fully inclusive PE curriculum. Children will experience high quality Physical Education, Physical activity and School Sport through external coaching and an extra lesson per week led by the class teacher. Through in-house competitions and external games and matches, our children will develop team etiquette and know that it is just as important to take part and support your peers, as it is to win a game. By the time our pupils reach Year 6, they will have a good understanding of a vast array of physical skills and can think about the best way to apply them. We want children to actively seek opportunities to help each other, whether that’s as part of a team or helping another individual. We aim to shape our children into healthy, social and active young people who will develop a lifelong love for sports and/or physical activity.

  • We intend to build the skills, knowledge and confidence of our children for activity and sport.
  • We will allow our children to learn about themselves, the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle, self-expression and concepts such as fair play and respect.
  • We will develop a range of important cognitive skills, such as decision making and analysis, and social skills such as teamwork and communication.
  • We will support our children to develop their character including their resilience, confidence and independence – and knowing how to keep physically and mentally healthy.

PE Impact

We use a range of strategies to assess what skills and knowledge the children have attained each term including the following:

  • RAG rating
  • Sending pupils to competitions
  • Assessing children against the Learning Outcomes
