At St Nicholas, we want to create a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world. We encourage the children to explore their world through practical experiences and the development of skills of Scientific Enquiry and Investigation.
We aim to:
- Build on children’s natural curiosity and interest
- Develop enjoyment in Science
- Develop an appreciation of the role of Science in everyday life
- Use a range of investigative techniques including careful observation and measurement.
- Develop pupil’s scientific vocabulary
- Use formative assessment to build on children’s current knowledge and address any misconceptions.
Implementation
Teachers create a positive attitude to Science through modelling of excitement and curiosity. They have an expectation that all children can achieve high standards in Science. Children are given the opportunity to explore their own Scientific understanding through careful and open questioning and the opportunity for discussion.
- Science is taught weekly using clear plans in line with the national curriculum.
- Skills of working scientifically are built into lessons across the curriculum.
- Children are encouraged to ask their own questions and where possible, use their scientific skills to answer these questions.
- Where possible, cross curricular links are made with other subjects, particularly Maths and English
- Educational visits are planned by teachers to support the learning and the use of the outdoor environment, particularly the garden, is encouraged.
- Staff meeting time is given for teachers to discuss the impact of teaching
