Art is as natural as sunshine and as vital as nourishment –Mary Ann F Kohl
Art Competitions 2023-2024

Art Intent
At St. Nicholas we aim to deliver an inspirational and creative art curriculum that allows pupils to express themselves in many different ways. We aim for children to become confident when using a variety of tools and mediums; becoming familiar with different techniques and have an extensive knowledge of the works and styles of famous artists. Through a fully inclusive environment, pupil’s personalities will be reflected and encouraged in their work. High quality art teaching creates an enjoyable and memorable learning experience.
We aim to do this by providing the children with enriching memorable opportunities which will expose them to the broad arts culture. By the time our students leave us, they will be equipped with the skills, concepts, knowledge and confidence to create their own works of art, as we believe everyone is an artist.
Art Implementation
Art is embedded through our school curriculum being taught in cross-curricular sessions as well as through weekly sessions. Lessons focus on knowledge and skills that are progressive throughout the school.
From EYFS, children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, textiles and collage. Opportunities are provided for children to develop these skills. Sketchbooks are used throughout KS1 and KS2 to allow children to explore, experiment and develop their art. Pupils are encouraged to take pride in their sketchbooks and reflect on work during their time at our school.
Our art lessons encourage children to evaluate their work and are provided with the tools to develop their work. Children are also able to take part in many different themed competitions throughout the year.
Art Impact
Classroom displays and sketch books reflect the children’s pride in their artwork and this is also demonstrated by creative outcomes across the wider curriculum.
The school environment also celebrates children’s achievements in art and demonstrates the subject’s high status in the school, with outcomes, competitions, indoor and outdoor environments. The Art curriculum at St. Nicholas C of E Primary Academy contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection.
In Art, we use a range of strategies to assess what skills and knowledge the children have attained each term including the following:
- Book looks
- Pupil voice
- Regular feedback each lesson
- In the moment marking
