Music

Life is better with music

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Trip – 2024

 Music at St Nicholas

At St Nicholas, we want children to see themselves as musical and as musicians. We want them to experience a wide range of music from different time periods, cultures and methods and discuss similarities, differences and their own preferences and opinions about music in a friendly and inclusive environment. We also want them to have the skills and knowledge to explain their ideas and to understand the music that they listen to in a range of contexts.

We aim to:

  • Build on children’s natural curiosity and interest
  • Develop enjoyment in Music
  • Develop an appreciation of the historical, cultural and thematic background of different styles of music.
  • Develop pupil’s musical vocabulary and technical ability in playing, singing and composing music.
  • Use formative assessment to build on children’s current knowledge and address any misconceptions.

Implementation

Teachers create a positive attitude to Music through modeling of excitement and interest. They have an expectation that all children can achieve high standards in Music. Children are given the opportunity to explore their own Musical understanding and interests through careful and open questioning and the opportunity for discussion.

  • Music is taught weekly using clear plans in line with the national curriculum, through singing in class and Collective worship and in discreet Music sessions.
  • Technical musical skills are built into music lessons.
  • Children are encouraged to ask their own questions and where possible, use their knowledge and understanding to answer these questions.
  • Where possible, cross curricular links are made with other subjects, particularly Maths and English
  • Opportunities are made for children to experience music performances in videos and live.
  • Staff meeting time is given for teachers to discuss the impact of teaching

Impact

  • Children have an interest and understanding of a range of musical styles and cultures.
  • Children can make links between aspects of their learning
  • Children are able to ask questions to investigate.
  • Children are able to work practically and collaboratively.
  • We aim for every child to meet at least age related expectations.
  • Children are well prepared for the next stage of their educational journey.
